Merle Webb: The Heart of Hickory
Merle Webb has the heart of a Husker
Every championship team needs stars.
Every championship team also needs someone who keeps everyone together.
For Hickory, that person was Merle Webb.
Webb never led the team in scoring.
He rarely made headlines.
But teammates insist Hickory never reaches the state championship without him.
"He was the glue," said Coach Norman Dale. "Every great team has one."
Throughout the season, Webb embraced whatever role the Huskers needed.
Defense.
Rebounding.
Leadership.
Encouragement.
When younger players lost confidence, Webb was there.
When games became physical, Webb answered.
When pressure mounted during the tournament, Webb remained steady.
His contributions rarely appeared in the box score, but they were impossible to miss for anyone paying attention.
Championship banners often celebrate stars.
Inside the Hickory locker room, players know they were built by teammates like Merle Webb.
And that's exactly how he prefers it.
