Aggies Shine Bright: 2025-2026 Basketball Midseason Recap
Sylacauga’s boys head into the break unbeaten while the girls sit at .500 after a strong first half.
SYLACAUGA, Ala. - As the Sylacauga Aggies basketball teams head into Christmas break, the boys remain unbeaten while the girls continue to show growth and resilience. The Sylacauga boys have stormed through the first half of the season at 13-0, extending the momentum that began under Head Coach Joel Jones last year. Meanwhile, the Lady Aggies have experienced some ups and downs but sit at an even 7-7 record.
After finishing 30-4 last season and falling just short in the 5A State Championship game against Vigor, the boys returned most of their key contributors with the exception of Jordan Roberson and Ayden Crowe. A mix of returning players and new faces opened the season with a hard-fought 63-50 victory over Lincoln, as the team worked to find chemistry on the floor. Since that first game, the Aggies have dominated most of their matchups but have faced challenges, particularly against the Childersburg Tigers, who led at halftime in both meetings. Sylacauga showed its poise in those contests, including a dramatic 47-46 win on December 19 when Erick O'Neal hit a buzzer-beating layup.
The trio of C.J. Franklin, Erick O'Neal, and Joshua Speer has led the way this season. Franklin averages 13.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. O'Neal contributes 12.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 steals. Speer is leading the team with 14.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Behind them, a supporting cast that includes Corbyn Patterson, Tristan Whetstone, Kinsen Threatt, Se'ryon McMillian, Jace Welch, and Jeshua Holtzclaw has stepped up when called upon.
The Lady Aggies have already surpassed last year's win total of six with half of the season still remaining. Like the boys, they opened the season with a win over Lincoln, 45-35, and built early momentum with victories over Ohatchee, Woodland, B.B. Comer, Talladega, and Childersburg. They also finished as runner-up in the Heflin Thanksgiving Tournament. The most important win of the season so far came on December 9 against area rival Shelby County. Sylacauga did not win an area game last season, but this year they dominated their first one from start to finish, forcing turnovers and converting them into points in a commanding 74-34 victory.
Losing one of the most accomplished players in Lady Aggie history, Journey Smith, raised concerns for the team, but Kailyn Cannon, Hailey Cannon, and Acacia Patterson have stepped into leadership roles. Kailyn averages 12.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game. Hailey contributes 8.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.5 steals, while Patterson adds 12.4 points and 3.3 steals per game. Beyond these leaders, several other players have come off the bench to make key contributions, keeping the team competitive in every matchup.
Up Next: The Sylacauga boys will face area opponent Briarwood on January 6 at Briarwood, while the Lady Aggies will take on John Carroll on December 27 at Spain Park in the Jag Challenge.
